Andronis, the jewel of Oia hotelsOia boasts what may be the most beautiful sunset in the world... Oia, which is pronounced ‘Ia’ in Greek, is certainly the most famous of all villages on the island and only 11 kilometres from the main town of Thira (or Fira). It is particularly well known for its serene pace of life and spectacular sunsets, undoubtedly the most beautiful and picturesque village of Santorini. Oia is situated on top of an impressive cliff and offers an unparalleled view over the volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni, as well as the island of Thirassia. This traditional village features charming houses along narrow streets, blue domed churches, and sun-bathed verandas. Its streets have plenty of shops, tavernas, cafés, traditional bakeries and much more. There are also several cultural attractions like the Maritime Museum which houses a small library, items from the maritime life of the area, and the vestiges of a Venetian fortress. Several artists have fallen in love with the area and have settled there, giving rise to a multitude of art galleries in Oia. Lastly, the tiny port of Ammoudi which can be reached by a set of 300 steps offers small boats that can take you to the island of Thirassia just opposite. There’s a lovely beach called Armenis that’s worth a visit. Check out the Tripadvisor list for Oia hotels. |
